Aveda and Global Greengrants Fund - Lighting the way to corporate philanthropy
In 2007, Aveda raised approximately $700,000 for Greengrants though candle sales and customer donations from salons and spas. This translated into 186 projects in 15 countries such as India, Brazil and Bulgaria - communities where we make grants and where they (Aveda) source plants and flowers. -Read article

Earth Month 2009 Clean Water

EARTH MONTH 2009

Join Aveda this Earth Month, and help us reach our goal of $3 million for global and local clean water projects. What began as a day of awareness became $11 million raised for the Earth. So far. For more on Earth Month—where we've been, and where we're going—click here.

ORGANIC FARMING. BIG IMPACT.

Aveda has been making products with certified organic ingredients since 1994. We're now one of the largest purchasers of organics in the personal care industry, setting an example for others to follow: 90% of our essential oils and 89% of our raw herbal ingredients, by tonnage, are certified organic.

We partner with farmers all around the globe, supporting their conversion from conventional to organic farming—and in the process helping create a sustainable future. Read about farmers like the Bonchev family, our suppliers of Bulgarian lavender and rose, here.

And when you buy our Light the Way™ Candle, made with certified organic French lavender, 100% of the proceeds go to support Global Greengrants Fund's (GGF) water-related projects.

Learn more about them, and our other Earth Month partners here.

WALK FOR PEOPLE. WALK FOR PLANET. WALK FOR WATER.

This Earth Month, we're letting our feet do the talking, with our first-ever Aveda Walk for Water. Join us, or pledge an Aveda salon or spa. Click here.

Learn more from your local Aveda salon/spa. Find it here. And be sure to ask about Appointments for the Earth during April.

TAKE YOUR OWN STEPS.

Clean water makes a world of difference, and conservation is one of the easiest, most inexpensive ways to prevent water shortages. It's a simple as becoming more aware, and using less each time you use water:

  • Use less water in your home and yard to prevent wastewater and pollution from runoff. Sweep driveways and sidewalks, rather than hosing them down.
  • Use pesticides sparingly—if at all—and compost leaves and yard clippings for use as natural fertilizer in your garden or yard.
  • Pick up—and properly dispose of—pet waste, trash and other debris in your neighborhood; street gutters and storm drains often run directly into lakes, streams, rivers and wetlands.
  • Keep your car clean and green: choose a professional car wash that recycles its water; promptly repair auto leaks; and recycle used motor oil—a single quart that seeps into groundwater can pollute 250,000 gallons of drinking water*.
  • Properly recycle electronics, appliances, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), silver batteries and paint to keep toxic pollutants out of your water.
